Background

The European Noise Directive “Assessment and Management of Environmental Noise” that applies to environmental noise perceived by humans came into force in 2002. The aim of this Directive is to define a common approach to avoid, prevent or reduce harmful effects on human health due to exposure to environmental noise in urban area.

Since noise from road traffic is one of the major sources of noise perception, the directive will lead to action plans for road traffic noise reduction measures for a series of agglomerations.

It can be foreseen that a combination of supplementary measures will be required to achieve the necessary reduction.

Current models for noise perception calculation are not suitable to deliver information that is detailed enough for the assessment of alternative measure combinations or the ranking of different measures. Their modeling of noise emission is not detailed enough with respect to fleet composition, vehicle performance, diurnal variations in traffic conditions and source contributions.

The ROTRANOMO Project will close this gap.
